COURSE DESCRIPTION: A study of the thought and works of Paul The Apostle within his historical and cultural context. Focus is the New Testament letters generally assumed to be written by Paul; special emphasis on the New Testament church.

COURSE TEXTS:

1)BIBLE, in a standard translation (King James not recommended for this course)
2)An Introduction to the New Testament, Volume Two: The Pauline Epistles by D. Edmond Hiebert

HELPFUL RESOURCES (Not required but very helpful, and both free online at course website):

1)An exhaustive concordance, such as The Strongest NIV Exhaustive Concordance or Zondervan NIV Exhaustive Concordance

2.) An expository dictionary of NT Words, such as VINE’S

4.) BIBLE 2 Corinthians and Romans/Hiebert: Chapters 9-10 (pp. 135-201)
5.) BIBLE: Colossians and Philemon/Hiebert: Chapters 11-13 (205-251)
6.) MID TERM
7.) BIBLE :Ephesians and Philippians/Hiebert Chapters 14-15 (pp. 253-302)
8.) BIBLE:1 Timothy, Titus, 2 Timothy/Hiebert Chapters 16-19 (pp. 307-363)
9.) FINAL EXAM/PARTY

TERM PAPERS: Four pages, typed preferred. Besides the Bible, use at least three sources from the website bibliography in each paper.

A) What cross-cultural ministry happens in Paul’s letters? What cultural and cross-cultural issues arise? Apply principles for cross-cultural theology and ministry today.

B) Based on your reading of Paul, talk about the Pauline model for church leadership. What is Paul’s concept of “pastor”? Is Paul’s model relevant for today? How might it be adapted for our culture today?

GRADE: EXAMS 40% , TERM PAPERS 40%, CLASS PARTICIPATION/QUIZZES 20%
